Making the perfect charcuterie board isn’t as simple as it may seem. Even though it looks like people just throw a bunch of random foods on a wooden board, that’s far from the truth. It’s an art form, requiring a great deal of thought and decorative effort.

If you plan on making your own charcuterie board, there are a few rules to follow to ensure that it’s a crowd-pleaser. You’ll want to make sure you have at least one of each of the following sections.

Soft Cheese

The cheese is often the main event when it comes to charcuterie boards, so you need to make sure you’ve got something for everyone. Start out with a soft cheese, like brie or goat cheese. Just be sure to slice it beforehand or leave a serving knife with the tray.

Hard Cheese

Hard cheeses are super delicious to snack on. Some popular hard cheeses include gouda, parmesan, and cheddar. These are fun because you can cut or arrange them in fun ways.

Something Sweet

To balance out the salty cheeses, you’ll need something sweet. This can be anything from fresh fruit to dried fruit to little pieces of chocolate!

Salty Snack

You might want to add some sort of salty snack, too. You can add salted nuts or pretzels to your board for some crunchy salty goodness.

Crackers or Bread

Last but not least, you’ll need some sort of cracker or bread. You can choose a variety of flavored crackers, or make your own toasted slices of baguette!
