It’s time to get real with ourselves about certain things. When it comes to the food and drinks we consume on a daily basis, we’ve been conditioned to believe we love them exactly as they are. But do we actually? Coffee is a great example of this. Billions of people around the world drink it, but how many of us actually love the taste of coffee itself, and how many of us just like it for the sugar?
Do yourself a favor. If you’re someone who regularly puts sugar (or sweet creamer) in your coffee, don’t include it in your next cup of Joe. Drink the cup as you normally would, and ask yourself honestly whether or not you still like it.
The answer to that question might actually be yes. If that’s the case, great! You truly love coffee, and simply enjoy drinking it with sugar. But we’d be willing to bet that countless people out there wouldn’t actually enjoy their coffee without sugar.
There’s nothing wrong with not enjoying coffee without sugar, but it’s important to be aware of it and be honest with oneself about it. Because with all the talk that caffeine is a drug, sugar is also just as addicting, and just as bad for us.
Awareness of the way sugar draws us in to drink cup after cup is just as crucial as awareness of caffeine’s negative impacts on our health. It’s important to be mindful of your dependence on both caffeine and sugar! If this sounds all too familiar to you, don’t be alarmed because you’re not alone. Keep drinking coffee in the same manner if it suits you—just know every factor that’s at play.
