Pumpkin pie spice is a typical fall flavor but you can find yourself craving it any time of the year. If you can’t find it in stores at the moment or you simply don’t want to leave your home, here’s how to mix some common spices in order to make it.

How It’s Done

Contrary to a popular belief, pumpkin pie spice doesn’t contain any actual pumpkin. It’s called that because it was first used as a spice for pumpkin pie, but it’s actually a mixture of several common spices that give it its unique flavor. There’s cinnamon which is the base of this spice, and a few other things that make it special. To make it at home, mix the following spices as listed below:

  • 1 part cinnamon
  • 1/3 – 1 part ginger (depending on how spicy you want it to be)
  • 1/2 part cloves
  • 1/2 part allspice
  • 1/4 part nutmeg

Optionally, you can add another 1/4 part of additional spices if you want: cardamom, star anise, or black pepper. There are many ways you can use pumpkin pie spice, but the most common ones include adding it to various baked treats and to coffee. It goes great with a warm latte and always gives us that cozy feeling that’s calming and relaxing.
