From hot chocolate boards to ice cream boards, TikTok has given us many amazing trends that put a twist on charcuterie, and butter boards are the next one in line. They’re taking this social media platform by storm, but what exactly is the fuss about and how can you make one at home?
This emerging food trend started going viral after Brooklyn-based cook Justine Doiron posted about it, proclaiming butter boards the next charcuterie boards. Even though she put them on the map, she credited Joshua McFadden as the trend’s original creator since he’s been making them for about a decade.
“(I) used to do them for farm dinners where you’d have a bunch of different breads and spreads on the table. It was an opportunity to present butter and add fun, seasonal ingredients to it that made the butter more than the sum of its parts,” Doiron told US Today.

Butter boards are probably the easiest TikTok trend to recreate because all you have to do is spread softened butter on a board with chunks of toasted bread on the side. Butter can be either plain or infused with flavors and served alongside other popular spreads. Greens and herbs can be used as a topping, served with cheese, nuts, fruits, and other charcuterie board essentials.
