Over-salting soup is one of the most common cooking mistakes and we’ve all dealt with it at least once in a lifetime. Diluting it by pouring more water in is the most obvious fix, but it could make your soup bland, and here are three methods you could use if this one doesn’t work.

Add Acid

Adding some acid to your salty soup will do wonders for balancing the flavors. A splash of lemon juice or vinegar is your best bet, and you should start things off by adding just a squeeze or a teaspoon at a time before achieving the taste that you’re aiming for.

Potato Trick

Potato and other starches can do a great job soaking up the excess salt from your soup. You can use this method by simply placing a raw potato inside the pot of cooking soup, and remove it once it’s done soaking up some of the salty flavors from your soup.

Adding Dairy

Dairy can also do a great job diluting your soup and mellowing the saltiness. Milk may be the most obvious option, but it’s not the only one because you can also use yogurt, heavy cream, or sour cream to fix the taste of your salty soup.
