An Outbreak of Hepatitis A Has Resulted in a Frozen Fruit Recall

You may have to rethink those smoothies this week, following a recall of frozen fruit from major stores.

Scenic Fruit Company supplies frozen strawberries to Costco and Aldi, as well as a frozen organic tropical blend to Trader Joe’s. All those products have now been recalled due to an outbreak of Hepatitis A.

The infectious disease affects the liver and is typically caused by consuming food or water that has been contaminated. The results are nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, jaundice, fever, and abdominal pain that can last for around 8 weeks.

Over the last few months, there have been 5 cases of Hepatitis A linked to frozen organic strawberries. All 5 incidents occurred in Washington, and while there have been no deaths, 2 of those infected were admitted to hospital.

The decision to recall their products was made voluntarily by Scenic Fruit Company as a precautionary measure.

“Although Hepatitis A has not been detected on this product, out of an abundance of caution, consumers should stop consuming the product and return it to their local store for a refund,” Scenic Fruit announced. “The company has ceased the production and distribution of the product as FDA and the company continue their investigation as to what caused the problem.”

The CDC has advised people to check their freezers for the recalled fruit, and to either refund them or toss them in the trash can.
