Pancakes are one of the most universally loved desserts in the world. From thin crepes to traditional American pancakes, there are so many different versions of them that it can be hard to choose which ones to satisfy your craving with. If you’re in the mood for something new and creative, try making these Danish pancakes called aebleskiver.

What Are They?

The name aebleskiver literally means apple slices, even though there aren’t any apples in the recipe. Danish pancakes are shaped like little balls and they are similar to Yorkshire pudding or Dutch poffertjes. They can be served empty or with various additions such as Nutella.

How to Prepare Them

In order to make them in their original ball shape, you’re going to need a special pan. It typically holds seven aebleskivers. Once you make the batter, you pour it into the holes of the pan. When one side is done, you flip them to bake the other side. If you don’t have this specific pan, you can still make the pancakes by adding batter to hot oil with a ladle. Make sure to soak up the excess oil with paper towels once they are done.
