Sometimes in the kitchen, just like in life, simplicity is important. That doesn’t mean we shouldn’t test our boundaries and get a little funky every now and then. But it’s important to know what belongs where, and such is certainly the case with this simple guacamole recipe. If you’re new to making guacamole, you’ll realize soon that this isn’t rocket science—and it shouldn’t be.

Mashing the Avocado

The first thing you need is a ripe, moist, and well-functioning avocado. It can’t be too hard that you won’t be able to mash it, and it also can’t be too old that it’s starting to rot. Anyway, cut it in half, take out the pit, and scoop out the avocado innards and place it into a bowl. Mash up the innards until you’ve got a nice, hearty core for your guacamole.

The Extras

This is where you bring your guacamole to the next level. Dice up some onions, but be careful not to put too many, lest your guac become too bitter. Dice up some tomatoes as well, matching it with the amount of onions that you chopped. Add both the onions and tomatoes to your guacamole.

Add salt and pepper to your guacamole to your liking, as well as a squeeze or two (or three) of lemon. Mix it up well and you’re done! Eat it with nachos, on toast, or honestly by itself!
