There is a belief that putting cheese on anything makes it instantly better, and we’re here for it! It’s amazing that milk processed in a certain way can develop into such a variety of flavors—and if you don’t believe us, you should know that there are more than 1,800 types of cheeses in the world. Here are some that you should always have on hand.

Gouda

With its mild flavor, Gouda is one of the most popular cheeses in the world. The Dutch delight is typically made from cow’s milk and is sweet and creamy, making it perfect on sandwiches or as a snack. You can also get your hands on a smoked version for an added dimension of flavor.

Gruyère

If you’re looking for something punchier, Gruyère is the way to go. Nutty and earthy, depending on how much it has aged, Gruyère is excellent on cheese boards and really good in mac and cheese!

Camembert

Another cheese that is a staple on cheese boards is Camembert. Similar to Brie in texture and taste, Camembert dates all the way back to the 18th century. Its creamy nature means that it can also be baked into oozy goodness that is ideal to dip bread into.

Pecorino

Resembling Parmesan in taste and texture, Pecorino is hard, nutty, and utterly delicious. This cheese is excellent grated over pasta or shaved into salads, but also serves as the base for creamy cacio e pepe.

Mozzarella

What would this list be without the Italian classic?! Mozzarella is a key ingredient on pizza, but good quality mozzarella is also wonderful sliced in a Caprese salad.
