Bananas are one of those fruits you can find at your local supermarket all year round, and they’re always sweet and fresh—as long as you know how to pick the right ones. If you’re still not 100% sure how to do it every time, paying attention to these three things will help you make the right choice.

Right Color

You can rely on the color of the bananas when making your pick. Fresh bananas will still be bright yellow with green spots at each end. If you’re not planning to use your bananas right away, go with greener bananas since they’ll ripen in just a few days at room temperature.

Firm Texture

Your bananas will soften as they become riper, so you should make sure they’re still firm when buying them. Go for bananas of the firm and plump texture, and make sure their peels and stems are in a good shape.

No Splits and Bruises

Even if you don’t mind bananas with brown spots because you intend to use them right away, the ones with splits or dark, deep spots are best avoided. It’s highly likely they have been bruised, and they won’t be of much use to you this way.
